Boeing delivered their first B-17F on 30 May 1942, just two days after the
last of the 512 B-17Es had rolled off the production line. The vast majority
of the first 300 B-17Fs served overseas with the USAAF's combat units.
Surviving B-17 were relegated to other duties in the various war theatres or
returned home to serve as trainers.
