This Woodkrafter Ship In A Bottle Kit Encloses the Constitution.
Boat Construction Suitable for Ages 12 and Older.
USS Constitution, the world's oldest commissioned warship remaining
afloat, launched her 57 year fighting career in 1798. She was one of six heavy
frigates that formed the tiny US Navy. Constitution was built larger than
other frigates of her era so she could carry more guns, but still smaller and
faster than other fighting ships. She was square rigged like other frigates,
but had sleeker underwater lines to make her more maneuverable and fast.
Structural members were made of live oak, the most durable wood in existence.
Her hull was of white oak planking, two or three feet thick. When a cannonball
bounced off her sides and fell into the ocean she was given the enduring
nickname "Old Ironsides."
